How to Measure Room and House Area

Accurate square footage measurements are critical when listing a property for sale, applying for home improvement permits, ordering construction materials (hardwood floors, carpets, drywall), or estimating paint requirements.

Area Formulas by Shape

Different floor plans require different mathematical formulas to compute area:

  • Rectangle/Square: Multiply length by width.
    (Area = Length * Width)
  • Triangle: Multiply the base length by height, then divide by two.
    (Area = [Base * Height] / 2)
  • Circle: Multiply Pi (~3.14159) by the radius squared.
    (Area = π * Radius2)
  • Trapezoid: Add the two parallel bases together, divide by two, and multiply by the height.
    (Area = [a + b] / 2 * Height)

Tips for Summing Up Multi-Room Properties

To estimate the total living area (Gross Living Area or GLA) of a house, measure the exterior walls rather than interior rooms. Lenders and appraiser standards (such as ANSI standards) only include finished, heated, and livable above-grade spaces, typically excluding unfinished basements, crawlspaces, open porches, and detached garages from official square footage totals.
