Understanding the Dew Point Calculator Sizing & Mechanics
Calculate the dew point and relative humidity using the Magnus-Tetens equation. Get convective cloud base heights and surface condensation risk logs.
Why Dew Point Sizing Matters
- Comfort Indexing: Dew point is a far better indicator of comfort than relative humidity. A dew point above 65°F (18°C) feels sticky and humid, while a dew point above 70°F (21°C) is oppressive, regardless of actual air temperature.
- Aviation & Gliding: Pilots and glider operators calculate the cloud base height (LCL) to determine the altitude of convective clouds (cumulus clouds) and identify low-visibility fog hazards.
- Agricultural Frost Guard: Helps farmers predict if overnight temperatures will drop below freezing in damp conditions, causing damaging frost to settle on crop leaves.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is dew point and why does it matter?
The dew point is the temperature to which air must be cooled to become fully saturated with water vapor. It represents an absolute measure of atmospheric moisture. Higher dew points feel stickier, while lower dew points indicate dry, comfortable air.
How is cloud base height calculated?
As warm air rises, it cools at the dry adiabatic lapse rate of 5.4°F/1,000 ft, while the dew point falls at 1.0°F/1,000 ft. They converge at a rate of 4.4°F per 1,000 feet. Dividing the temperature spread (T - Td) by 4.4 and multiplying by 1,000 yields the estimated cloud base height.
Does this calculate cloud base height?
Yes. Get convective cloud base and condensation risk using Magnus-Tetens equation.
